CHIH KAN LOU (Fort Provintia)
During the peridd when the Dutch occupied Taiwan (1624 1662), they built two (1653) on this site. forts, Fort Zeelandia r624) in An Ping and Fort Provintia Since the ChInese name for this area was Ch'ih K'an, the latter structure came to be known by local inhabitants as Ch'ih K'an Cheng or Ch'ih K'an. Lou. In 1661 the Chinese patr iot Kox inga regained Taiwan from the Dutch. He first captured Fort Provintia and used it as his residence. Later, when Fort Zeelandia fell to him, he moved his residence there and used this fort as his govern mental office. In 1664 it was converted into a powder magazine. In 1750 the fort was opened to the public on certain festivals and was designated as one of the eight Scenic spots of Taiwan Hsien. It was given the literary title"The Western Sunset Glow at Ch'ih K'an Fort. The spiendid view of the city and the magnificient sunsets seen from the tower made Ch'th K'an Lou famous. Consequently, by 1805 However, the buildings about half of the structure had collapsed. During the late 19th century, two good repair. were not kept in on the old foundations and named them "The magistrates eyected four buildings Temple of tne Sea God "The Pavilion of the God of Literature", "The Hall of The Five Great Sung Dynasty Scholars and "The Peng Hu Academy", The latter two disappeared years ago,but the first two still stand. In 1966 they were restored They halls are tine examples of the classical style of Chinese architecture and are splendic manments of Tainan, the old capital.
